You may or may not have read the blog about our Christmas traditions, and if you follow me on Instagram, you probably know I failed miserably at some of them. When I became a mom I set out to make this time of year as amazing as possible. I think somewhere along the way I lost the family aspect of it. I created a list in my head of what Christmas needed to be and inevitably set myself up for failure.
In the process, I had a wakeup call. Watching my son with such delight embrace the unexpected holiday things was eyeopening for me. He screams out in delight every time we pass a house with lights on it, and now every tree is a Christmas tree. Not on my tradition list is any holiday movies. Impromptu, we decided to go see The Grinch, and it became my favorite thing we’ve done as a family so far. It was my first time taking Leo to the movies and as nervous as I was, it was amazing. Leo start, memorized through the whole movie, and he now knows the words to the songs. He now has a little stuffed Grinch he carries with him everywhere.
Here’s what I learned for watching and reading The Grinch a few times. Christmas will alway be Christmas without the presents and traditions. December 25th comes every year, same time, and even though it may be 40 degrees out and there’s no snow, it’s still about family (and Jesus). I LOVE giving gifts and seeing the lights and finding our little traditions, but at the end of the day that doesn’t matter. My failures this year don’t make the season any less jolly, it just means my perspective has stunk. We’re still going to gather on Christmas day, hold hands, and sing, “Fahoo fores” …. Well, not exactly that, but you get the picture.
Leo still is in love with Christmas in every way, and that means I’m doing my job. Merry Christmas, from my family to yours.
